Student Outcomes

Closing the awarding gaps:

The Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ is committed to tackling academic inequality by creating a more equitable experience for all students. The Outcomes team use data and student insights to understand disparities in student success – such as in retention rates (continuation gaps) and rates of good degrees (awarding gaps) – and work with staff to identify steps to close them.

The role of teaching and learning:

Research shows that inclusive teaching is key to sustainably reducing these gaps. Many of the most effective approaches align with the inclusive teaching principles already embedded across CQSD guidance

For more targeted strategies, the offers an in-depth look at how Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ students are affected by awarding gaps.

Policies & commitments:

Efforts to address awarding gaps are central to our vision and strategy, as articulated by several key frameworks.

  • All higher education providers in the United Kingdom are duty-bound to set out targets and intervention strategies for reducing outcome gaps in an Access and Participation Plan (APP). Our APP includes targets for mature students, minority ethnic students (as well as Black students, specifically) and students from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

  • Pursuant to the Race Equality Charter Mark, the Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ is working towards a target of reducing the minority ethnic awarding gap to 4% by 2026.

  • Principle 3 of the (“Student centred & inclusive”) aims to ensure our programmes are designed and delivered in a manner that is consistent with good practice to close awarding gaps.
